CAPT James Chamblee Meredith, USPHS (Ret.) experienced 12 atomic explosions. For a brief period in his long career as a Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officer, CAPT Meredith was stationed at Camp Mercury, Nevada. He provided off-site monitoring for Operation Plumbbob, the atomic tests of 1957. Dozens of fellow PHS officers were around the Camp Mercury or greater Southwest region, testing for nuclear exposure in the nearby human and animal populations. The entire episode was quite impactful for CAPT Meredith. Read his first-hand accounts here.
